Known as a Mecca for retirees, Palmer Ranch is increasingly becoming home to young families and active professionals. A big factor drawing the younger generation is the excellent school system, including Ashton Elementary, Sarasota Middle, and Riverview High School.

Palmer Ranch today consists of 10,000 acres of the roughly 80,000 acres originally purchased in the early 1900s by Bertha Honore Palmer, widow of Chicago department store tycoon Potter Palmer. A world-renowned socialite, art patron and business woman, she was a progressive agriculturalist as well.

After her death in 1918, she left her vast estate in the hands of her two sons, Honore and Potter Palmer, Jr. The estate was later purchased by the late businessman and Tampa Bay Buccaneer Hugh Culverhouse

Although conceived on a grand scale, Palmer Ranch is a model of people-friendly residential development. Each of it’s distinct communities offer a slightly different twist on the joy of living in Sarasota.

 Arielle

Arielle is an excellent option for avid golfers and cost-conscious seasonal and year-round residents. It is one of the best and most affordable condominium communities on Palmer Ranch, with the added benefit of being conveniently located across the street from the world-class TCP Golf Course.

Many homes overlook the expansive fairways of the famous Tournament Players Club of Prestancia, while others offer scenic lake views.

 The Hamptons

The Hamptons is an upscale community conveniently located off Honore Ave. and easily accessible to the beaches, downtown and I75 as well. It is one of the more recently developed neighborhoods on Palmer Ranch, with most homes built by the Lennar Corporation about 5 years ago. Their size ranges from 1700 to 3200 square feet and private pools and paver drives are popular here. Home prices range between $450,000 and $700,000, although there are some exceptions.

The Hamptons community encompasses three distinct sections, North, South and West Hampton. North Hampton is a non-gated area of lovely homes. South Hampton is also non-gated, but the association fees include landscaping maintenance, a real advantage to seasonal residents. West Hampton is gated and is comprised of the larger, more expensive homes in the community.  Home sale prices ranged from $300,000-$550,000 in 2007.

Prestancia is without a doubt one of the most coveted addresses in the greater Sarasota area. Stonebridge is an intimate community located south of The Hamptons and north of Turtle Rock.  Approached from Sarasota Parkway by Featherstone Blvd. and encompassing Ridge Rd., Flagstone Dr.  & Trestle Ct., the homes range from 1700 to 3000 square feet in size, offer 2 to 4 bedrooms and were built between 1996 and 2001.  This is a deed-restricted community with most homes enjoying preserve or lake views. The heated community pool offers a great place to get together with neighbors, although many homes have private pools as well.

Located on south-central Palmer Ranch, the community of Stoneybrook offers a challenging semi-private 18 hole golf course, pro-shop and a clubhouse with a full service dining room as well as a casual grill and lounge. Located across Central Sarasota Parkway from Stoneybrook, Turtle Rock is a haven for nature enthusiasts of all ages. Much of the land is set aside as nature preserves, where wildlife viewing is exceptional. Red tailed hawks, ibis, storks, sandhill cranes, and woodpeckers abound. The waters of the lakes teem with fish, turtles are plentiful, and an alligator can occasionally be seen sunning on a bank.
